Joel and Chemaine Almquist are the heart and soul behind Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary. They founded the sanctuary in 1995, driven by a deep-seated passion for rescuing and caring for exotic and native animals. Their journey began modestly, caring for rescued animals in their mobile home, and through relentless dedication, they achieved nonprofit status in 2000. In 2009, their commitment was recognized nationally when Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition helped rebuild the sanctuary, amplifying their ability to provide refuge and care.
The Almquists’ vision extends beyond animal rescue. They are committed to educating the public about wildlife conservation and the responsible treatment of exotic animals. Their sanctuary is not just a home for animals in need but also a community hub for learning and awareness. Joel and Chemaine continue to lead Forever Wild with compassion and unwavering dedication, ensuring each animal receives the highest quality of life and care. Their work has inspired many and solidified Forever Wild as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of compassion and perseverance in wildlife conservation.

Since joining Forever Wild six years ago as a full time worker, Kiah Almquist has been an integral part of the sanctuary’s operations. Currently serving as the General Manager, Kiah also spearheads our social media outreach, bringing the sanctuary’s stories to a wider audience.
Kiah’s favorite animals at the sanctuary are Poke, the spider monkey, and Catori, the coyote, each of whom has a unique story and character that she loves to share. Her memorable experiences include participating in the OC Pet Expo, where she had the opportunity to educate the public about exotic animals and the importance of wildlife conservation.
Inspired by her family’s dedication to animal welfare, Kiah continues this legacy through her work. She is particularly passionate about raising awareness of the plight of tigers, noting the troubling fact that there are more tigers in captivity than in the wild.
In addition to her managerial duties, Kiah enjoys creating engaging and educational content for the sanctuary’s social media platforms. She believes in the power of humor and education to connect people with the sanctuary’s mission.
Her message to visitors is simple yet powerful: “Have fun, ask questions, be kind!” She emphasizes the importance of understanding why exotic animals should not be kept as pets and encourages everyone to support the sanctuary through volunteering or donations.
Looking to the future, Kiah has ambitious goals for Forever Wild. She hopes to expand the habitats for the sanctuary’s animals, relying on the community’s support in terms of donations, supplies, and volunteer time. Her commitment to the sanctuary and its residents is a testament to her passion for animal care and conservation.

Since joining Forever Wild in September 2013, Shannon Sharyer has dedicated herself to the well-being and enrichment of our animals, serving as a Senior Keeper and Vice President on the Board of Directors. With a rich background in marine mammal care, Shannon's transition to caring for a diverse range of species at Forever Wild has been a journey of continuous learning and growth.
Among the many animals she cherishes, Yarah, Ayesha, Mosi, Zuni, Georgie, Catori, and Millie hold special places in her heart. Shannon recalls walking Rajalla as a cub fondly, a memory made even more memorable by her pregnancy at the time.
Shannon finds solace and therapy in the routine care of the animals, from cleaning enclosures to feeding, highlighting the therapeutic nature of being around these majestic beings. Her advice for anyone in the field is poignant: working with animals is a labor of love, often challenging, but immeasurably rewarding. The bonds formed are deep, and while the inevitable loss of these beloved creatures is hard, it underscores the passion and commitment required in this field.
Her commitment to Forever Wild is unwavering, and she envisions being a part of this sanctuary as long as she resides in California, drawn by the unbreakable bonds with both the animals and people here.

Rebecca Almager, a dedicated Level 4 Keeper, has been a part of the Forever Wild family for over three years. Her role is not just about providing care but also about fostering awareness and education among visitors. Rebecca finds it challenging to choose a favorite among the sanctuary’s residents, but Meeko the kinkajou, Meiko the raccoon, and Diesel the African leopard hold special places in her heart. Her journey at the sanctuary has been marked by forming profound attachments with the animals, an experience she cherishes deeply. Rebecca’s passion for animal welfare led her to seize the opportunity to join Forever Wild, where she has gained significant insights into animal enrichment and its vital role in maintaining the animals’ happiness and stress-free lives. Since joining Forever Wild in March 2021, Heather Joerger has become a vital member of our team, embracing her role as a Level 4 Keeper with a keen interest in venomous reptiles. Her bond with BBG, a notably intelligent and selectively affectionate animal, is a highlight of her experience. A memorable moment for Heather was receiving affectionate gestures from Shiva, our tiger, marking a significant milestone in her journey with animals. Heather’s passion for animal care was sparked by “Extreme Home Makeover” and has only grown since joining our sanctuary. She has gained valuable insights, including the importance of not touching tortoises and the unique hydration method of frogs. Heather emphasizes the need for thorough research and understanding before interacting with or owning any animal. As she continues her journey with us, Heather’s ambition is to specialize in the care and handling of venomous species, further enhancing her skills and contributions to Forever Wild.

Pam Hyle's journey at Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary began 8 years ago and has been a story of dedication, learning, and profound connections. Without a specific title, Pam's role as a volunteer keeper is to be a jack-of-all-trades, stepping in wherever needed, from insects to tigers.
While Pam finds it impossible to choose a favorite among the many amazing animals, there was a special bond with Willie, a red-handed tamarin monkey, that she fondly remembers as a "true love affair."
Pam's journey to Forever Wild started with regular visits which turned into a passionate commitment the moment she realized that the keepers were all volunteers. "Sometimes I still can't believe I get to come here and care for these incredible animals," she reflects.
Pam's time at the sanctuary has been an enriching learning experience. She's become a versatile caretaker, gaining knowledge in the care of a wide range of species. More importantly, she's learned how to be a better human – an experience she describes as humbling.
Originally thinking of herself as a 'tiger person,' Pam was surprised to discover her affinity for monkeys. This revelation is just one aspect of the continuous discovery that defines her time at Forever Wild.
Pam speaks highly of her fellow volunteers, praising their knowledge and big hearts. She acknowledges the hard work and emotional challenges involved, especially the heartbreak of losing an animal. "Foreverwild does not breed, sell, or buy. Our animals are treated with the greatest respect and passion," she emphasizes, highlighting the sanctuary's commitment to its residents.
Looking ahead, Pam aspires to absorb as much knowledge as possible from experienced volunteers and aims to continue her journey at Forever Wild for another 8 years, contributing her blood, sweat, and tears to the animals she cherishes.
This is just a small portion of the dedicated Forever Wild Staff that makes sure the animals are taken care of and day-to-day operations run smoothly.
We are extremely grateful for all of our volunteers.
